"Breakthrough Leadership and Culture Development"
April 24, 2008

Doug Lennick, co-author with Fred Kiel, Ph.D. of Moral Intelligence, Enhancing Business Performance & Leadership Success

The news programs are filled with examples of seemingly competent and high performing executives and professionals falling from grace and causing untold disasters. Leaders at Enron, Mitsubishi, Adelphia Communications, Lucent Technologies, HealthSouth and countless others have been in the headlines for unethical and illegal actions. Recently, rogue traders at large financial firms have taken on huge risks and failed miserably. This kind of moral dysfunction not only ruins businesses and hurts stockholders, but lives are ruined and financial futures and careers for thousands of people are put in jeopardy. Why do such smart people make such bad decisions? How can we help ensure it doesn’t happen in our organizations.

As Human Resource professionals, we’ve long considered intelligence in selection, development and promotion decisions. We’ve also known that intelligence alone is not enough. The social and interpersonal skills and conflict management and decision making skills required for leaders differentiate smart leaders from successful leaders. These characteristics and competencies have come to be known as Emotional Intelligence, or EQ. But many of the leaders of the companies listed above demonstrated charm and charisma in addition to raw intelligence. What they seemed to be missing was a moral compass – deeply held convictions, beliefs and values that point them in the right direction and form the basis for integrity, responsibility and compassion.

New research into leadership is helping us understand that Moral Intelligence is often the differentiating characteristic of sustained success. Doug Lennick, co-author with Fred Kiel, Ph.D. of Moral Intelligence, Enhancing Business Performance & Leadership Success, will share his knowledge of this important new research and how Moral Intelligence, Emotional Intelligence and even Neuro Science are all important elements in our understanding of leadership. Doug will share his experiences and knowledge of the topic and present real life examples of how morally competent leaders can help build great organizations and strong, high-performing cultures.
